The group of paintings to which I now refer simply as The Series was begun in 1966. Of course, at the time I had no idea I was beginning a series! These paintings have come to represent chapters of a life of searching and, hopefully, of growth.
In the beginning, we are at an impasse--we want something more in life, but perhaps we don't know it or can't see it. Nevertheless, if we reach out and begin to search, we have taken the first step on a long, long journey. Sometimes we waste a lot of time trying this and that--everything except the thing we must do to take the next important step. We slowly begin to become aware in various ways. The journey is full of switchbacks and false starts, plateaus and disappointments. And there are times when we just can't keep up with our own growth, and stumble over our own feet like adolescents in a growth spurt.
I have not attempted to explain the paintings, but simply to provide the odd hint. I am still seeing new meanings, in some cases years later.
One might say these are typical Aquarian Age paintings, concerned as they are with personal transformation. I like to think so, as I am myself an Aquarian. The hope of this age is that mankind shall come into its own as fully self-actualized humankind. To this end, we must each of us look after our own salvation with diligence.
