19.   GIRL CLIMBING: EFFORT

The girl, garbed in yellow, is climbing a steep slope with assistance from above. Below and behind her is a body of water on which a few boats sail lazily about. On the distant shore are a factory, a house, and some trees.

It seems to be unanimous among the great mystics who have attained it that Enlightenment simply "happens." You cannot make it happen. Paradoxically, this event is almost always preceded at some point on the Path--perhaps more than once--by a period of intense effort, when the usual concerns may be neglected. One may become involved in austerities, meditation, fasts; one-pointed service to others or to God; yoga; a martial art.

It is as though one must set the stage and then patiently await the results.
