The Gold Watch

THE GOLD WATCH

Amaru repaired the huge gold watch and it kept perfect time.

But one day, it stopped, at exactly 3:30. Amaru instantly knew what that meant. He was a little puzzled when 3:30 came and went without incident, but he just went about his business. Several days later, at exactly 3:30 in the afternoon, Death walked in the door. Amaru was as usual working with several of the village children.

Amaru looked up, put down his hammer, and prepared to follow Death. He was more than ready this time. He had taught the villagers everything he could, according to their understanding. As he got up to go, one of the older boys--Amaru’s favourite, Ranjit--said, “Uncle, do you have anything to say to us before you go?”

Amaru turned, his brown face crinkling in an amused smile. “Yes,” he said. “Listen. Just Listen.”

At that moment, both he and Death disappeared, leaving the watch behind, which kept perfect time from then on.
